Okinawa, once known as Ryukyu Kingdom was left with an abundance of treasures.
Their traditional craft arts are one of these treasures, passed down from one
generation to the next. At Naha City Traditional Arts and Crafts Center, there are five
types of workshops – including Shuri cloth weaving, Ryukyu Lacquerware making and
Bingata (traditional cloth dying) – that run daily where you can experience Ryukyu craft.

Learn traditional martial arts from a passionate master

In the traditional Okinawa themed experience village, Murasaki Mura, an Englishman, Kevin Chaplin runs
a dojo, which means studio. Kevin is a master of traditional Okinawa-style karate. His one hour lesson for
one person or more, involves learning about the history, the tricks and the philosophy of Okinawa-style
karate. Learning about traditional Okinawa through another foreigner makes for a very unique experience.

The beauty of Okinawa reflected in colourful textiles

All three levels of Shuri Ryusen is filled with the most beautiful pieces of traditional
Okinawa culture. Ryusen is the art of dying textiles using plant based and fossilised
coral based dye. Here you can choose from a variety of fabrics like scarves and try this
gorgeous art form first hand or watch the pros do it in the workshop. Be sure to stroll
through the gallery-like gift shop and cafe for some tea too.
