G'Day Japan! / Event / Yamagata Snow Festival

Located just 2.5 hours north of Tokyo is Yamagata Prefecture – the powder rich and culturally rich ‘hot spring kingdom’ of the Tohoku area.

Yamagata is known to be one of Japan’s heaviest snowfall areas, which attracts many during snow season every year, but it is also known well for the strong presence of traditional Japanese culture that can be felt from the local food and atmosphere.

It is also home to the 1,900 years-old hot spring village of Zao Onsen, which is one of many villages like such in Yamagata, giving it the title of ‘hot spring kingdom’.

In February 2016, the Yamagata Snow Festival was hosted for the very first time over three days. The festival attracted 16,000 people to enjoy all of the delights it had to offer.

Yamagata Snow Festival will be back again this year for another three fun filled days, starting on the 3rd of February and ending 5th of February. The location of the festival is the same as last year, it will be held at Mogami-gawa Furusato Park in Sagae City.

All throughout the three days, festival goers will be able to enjoy local cuisine and delicious Japanese food made with local produces at various stalls. The venue will have life-size igloos, illumination after dark as well as fireworks on the 4th. There will also be three days of live entertainment by Japanese artists and of course, plenty of snow.

A courtesy shuttle bus will be available to catch from a selection of stops within Sagae city, including Sagae station.
