Aizu, Fukushima – Japan’s Secret Winter Wonderland

With world-class snow, easy access, and minimal jetlag, Japan has become the top winter sports destination for Australians. While well-known resorts like Niseko and Hakuba cater heavily to international visitors, those in search of a more authentic, off-the-beaten-path experience will find all they’re looking for in Aizu—nestled deep in the mountainous heart of inland Fukushima.

Fukushima, at the bottom of Japan’s northern Tohoku region, stretches deep into the rugged mountains of central Japan. Tucked within this dramatic landscape lies the Aizu region—rich in culture, tradition, and a winter climate that delivers thick, luxurious snowfall. While Aizu’s ski resorts are largely undiscovered by international visitors, locals flock to make the most of the superb conditions and diverse terrain suited to everyone from first-timers to experts.

Aizu’s most popular ski resorts include Hoshino Resorts NEKOMA Mountain, one of the largest ski resorts in Japan; EN RESORT Grandeco, where you can join private English skiing lessons; and Inawashiro Ski Resort, popular with both advanced skiers for its challenging Minero Area and families for its fun-filled Kids Zone. Aizu also boasts a long skiing season, running December to May, making it a good choice for those visiting Japan outside the middle of winter.

Alongside winter sports, Aizu has a wealth of historical and cultural attractions to fill your itinerary with. History buffs will love Aizu-Wakamatsu, Aizu’s main city, home to the striking red roof-tiled Tsuruga Castle, the surreal spiral-shaped Sazaedo Temple, and retro Nanokamachi-dori Street, lined with heritage buildings selling traditional crafts.

Foodies will adore Kitakata, whose soy sauce-based, roasted pork-packed ramen has earned it a ranking as one of Japan’s top 3 ramen destinations. Sake-lovers are likewise spoilt for choice, with numerous sake breweries boasting 100+ year histories dotting Aizu, flourishing thanks to the area’s pristine water and high-quality rice. Several breweries are open for tours, and winter is the most active season for sake brewing.
